About
Stu Savory ;-) School report for Stu Savory
Eunoia, who is a grumpy, overeducated, facetious, multilingual naturalised German, blatantly opinionated, old (1944-vintage), amateur cryptologist, computer consultant, atheist, flying instructor, bulldog-lover, Porsche-driver, textbook-writer and blogger living in the foothills south of the northern German plains. Not too shy to reveal his true name or even whereabouts, he blogs his opinions, and humour and rants irregularly. Stubbornly he clings to his beliefs, e.g. that Faith does not give answers, it only prevents you doing any goddamn questioning. You are as atheist as he is. When you understand why you don't believe in all the other gods, you will know why he does not believe in yours.

Oh, and after the death of his old bulldog, Kosmo, he also has a new bulldog, Clara, since September 2018 :-)

Octoberfest starts tomorrow

Many think that the Octoberfest, the beer festival in Munich, Bavaria, takes place in october. But it was moved forward to September soon after its first start to September to take advantage of the better weather. It runs through 5th October. There are 17 large beer tents (up to 7000 customer-seats per tent) and 21 smaller tents. At noon on saturday the city major pounds a tap into the first beer barrell to open the Octoberfest. A good start only takes two bashes, a bad start takes 5 or more. The start is in the Schottenhammel tent.

On sunday, there will be the parade of the landlords on their horse-drawn beer carts from the city centre to the Theresian fields where all the beer tents are. Viewing platforms are there for you to watch the parade from, but a seat this year costs 17.50 Euros to 36 Euros depending on the view.

Beer is dispensed in litre glasses called a Mass, which cost up to 15.80 Euros. Everything is very expensive. Half a grilled chicken costs 20,90€ this year, Pork thighs cost 24.40€, even a bottle of water costs 12€, too much in my opinion. Food and drinks are brought to your table by attractive waitresses dressed in a traditional dirndl, carrying up to 14 Mass weighing 1.3 kg each. Book your seats in the beer tents at this website.

As you see above, it does get rather crowded. There are lots of fairground rides too, four new ones this year. If this short summary has managed to whet your appetite, you can watch the opening ceremonies on national (german) TV (ARD) or bavarian TV on saturday, starting around 11.15 am.

Billions of Versions... wrote " (up to 7000 customer-seats per tent) Is it a two day walk from your seat to the bar to get another beer? " Waiting staff bring the beers, carrying 7 to 16 Mass at a time. Food is served 6 to 8 plates at a time on huge wooden trays. Staff get no base pay but 10% of the turnover. And they like tips too. These jobs are much sought after, they make a lot over 2+ weeks. One tent even grills whole oxen! Spectacular!
Regina Wank (sic) reports that on sunday the Schüetzen tent had to close its doors due to overcrowding. Hopefully with lots of pretty girls inside.

Blood Moon Rising

This is just a wake-up call so that you remember to watch the eclipse of the full moon on sunday. The Earth will be between the moon and the sun so that the sun casts the shadow of the Earth onto the full moon as the moon is rising.

This is a rare event, happening only every 2 to 3 years. The atmosphere diffracts the red light less, absorbing other colours, so that the moon appears red. Hence a blood moon, which should be visible across vast swaths of Asia, Europe, Australia and Africa. Not in the USA however, they will just get to see a corn moon, for the USA the corn moon will turn full at 2:10 p.m. EDT on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025. It will look full the nights either side. The best time to watch it rise in North America will be at moonrise at dusk later that day. Penumbral phase will last five hours and 27 minutes, totality 82 mins. Start watching at moonrise, 19:30 central european time.

Labor Day

In the USA, today is Labor Day, but since tRump does not know what real labor is, he congratulated "all those mothers bearing children today" ;-)

This blog is getting really unmanagable, so I've taken the first 12 years' archives offline. My blog, my random decision. Tough shit; YOLO.

This Blog's Status is
Blog Dewey Decimal Classification : 153
FWIW, 153 is a triangular number, meaning that you can arrange 153 items into an equilateral triangle (with 17 items on a side). It is also one of the six known truncated triangular numbers, because 1 and 15 are triangular numbers as well. It is a hexagonal number, meaning that you can distribute 153 points evenly at the corners and along the sides of a hexagon. It is the smallest 3-narcissistic number. This means it?s the sum of the cubes of its digits. It is the sum of the first five positive factorials. Yup, this is a 153-type blog. QED ;-)
